Kandersteg lies at the end of the Kander valley at 1200 m above sea level. Around 1,200 people live in the village over an area of 133.86 km², making Kandersteg the fourth largest municipality in the canton of Bern. However, because of the alpine setting only about 30% of the area is habitable or farmable.
